"Am I going after the American
Dream? No, I'm not. Because here we have to live in the reality
of who we are.” Those are the words of Judith, a Latina
housekeeper who immigrated from Guatemala to come find work in
Los Angeles. A mother of 4, Judith left her children back home
in search of a better future for her family. Like Judith’s,
Los Angeles is filled with stories of women who leave their families
behind to come work in American homes cleaning and raising other
women's children.
4 years in the making, MAID IN AMERICA
is a one-hour documentary which explores in an intimate way the
lives of 3 Latina immigrant women who work as nannies and housekeepers
in Los Angeles, CA. Through these women's lives we'll explore
the globalization of motherhood, the challenges they face while
in pursuit of the American dream and the significant role they
play in American households today.
We’ll meet Telma, a Salvadorian immigrant
nanny and Mickey, the 6 year old boy she's been taking care of
since he was a baby. Through their story we'll take a peek at
what life is like when Mom goes to work and the nanny takes over
Mom’s job.
For Eva, being a housekeeper is a means of making
a living until her situation changes. A 37 year-old woman, Eva
holds a BA in Accounting from Mexico. Because of her legal status
she cannot find work as an accountant and is forced to work as
a housekeeper. But this persistent and determined woman is not
about to give up yet.
With this film we have the rare opportunity to
share with the world the lives of these courageous and hard-working
women.
MAID IN AMERICA gives Latina nannies and housekeepers
a face and a voice.
